The South Downs Way: Day 3 🐾

Just a quick update before sleep comes.

A pretty long trek today. Difficult in the heat of the morning, but the hot sun didn’t last all day thankfully, as the grey rain clouds steadily followed us in from the south west.

A long trudge up to Buster hill, rewarded with ice cream and dog treats.

Then it’s a slow and careful slope down to where the A3 chisels its path through the hills like an angry river.
The Way passes under this, and then into the dense forests of Queen Elizabeth nature reserve.

It’s a very steep climb back up through the trees. And stifling with no wind to cool you under the canopy.
But it’s well worth it just to reach the top of the escarpment again, where the views here out through the leaves over the grassy valley beyond are something special.
We stopped for a rest and snack-break and I managed to snap a great shot of the dog admiring the view here.

After this, with the grey clouds looming heavy, it was a race to arrive in South Harting before the rain…We came in a close second!

Lovely pub dinner. Sméagol lapping up the attention of everyone he meets!
The old guy is coping so well with the walk. I knew he’d be fine.
He’s all tuckered out now though. Currently snoring very loudly beside me as I write this entry!
