Limited signal and almost out of power, so this will be a brief post tonight.
Started at Chanctonbury Ring, awoken by sheep nosing and bleating around the beech wooded crown of the hill. Ended the day at a campsite just below the Devil’s Dyke.
An apt pairing, because according to folklore, the summit of the first is the discarded earth from where Lucifer dug the trench of the second. I’m not sure about any of that, but it was a long, beautiful walk between the two. But very tough at times beneath the full blaze of the sun. We made sure we took regular water breaks. The views today were spectacular. We walked past Worthing and Shoreham to our right. Then dropped to cross the Adur river valley before another steep climb back up.
Once up to the high peak of Turliegh Hill we stopped for a good long break for an ice cream and dog treats before pressing on. The views now extended out over Birighton and Hove further East, and beyond them to my first real glimpses of white cliffs. Amazing to think that as the trail turns a little more inland, it will be another three days before I see them again.
Our last night of camping as we now hav B&Bs and pub dinners for the last two nights. So I took the chance to shed the last remaining food weight with a big feast for supper — meatballs and pasta, and a Moroccan bean stew. Followed by rice pudding and cream cheese on brown’s biscuits… these off-the-back-of-a-lorry MoD ration packs are pretty good!
