Our South Downs adventure: Day 1 🐾

(Retrospective)

We spent last night at an AirB&B in the heart of Winchester. Very comfortable but hard work dragging the backpack up two flights of stairs!

Awoke early and went out from the B&B to explore Winchester. Took Sméagol for a short walk through a small wooded area for his morning business.  We had a good, long mooch around the town before heading back to repack the rucksack.

Stopping first to pick up some postcards and dog treats, we had a little snack on the cool grass looking up at the cathedral, and finally left Winchester at around 1pm… just in time for the rain clouds to roll in and catch us in a torrential downpour with me wrestling the backpack, trying to take out the wet weather gear, as Sméagol fled for cover beneath the field-edge hedgerows!

But the rain didn’t last long thankfully.

We walked through a vast clear up operation for last week’s Boom Town music festival. Fields scattered with the collapsed corpses of abandoned tents, looking like the aftermath of some medieval battle!

Finished the day at a pub called the Milbury’s. A welcome glass of wine an now to bed… I’m so glad I suffered the extra weight and brought a proper camp bed!
